The African Union has expressed grave concern over the latest developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, particularly reports alleging the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and military attacks targeting Venezuelan state institutions, warning of the potential repercussions for regional and international stability.
In an official statement, the African Union reaffirmed its strong commitment to the core principles of international law, foremost among them respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
The statement emphasized the central role of dialogue and peaceful means in resolving conflicts and underscored the necessity of respecting constitutional and institutional frameworks, in line with the principles of good neighbourliness, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among states.
The African Union stressed that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela cannot be resolved in a sustainable manner except through an inclusive political dialogue led by Venezuelans themselves, cautioning against actions that could deepen the crisis or fuel further instability.
The Union also expressed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, reiterating its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.
Concluding its statement, the African Union called on all concerned parties to demonstrate restraint, responsibility, and full respect for international law, in order to prevent further escalation and safeguard regional peace and stability.
