Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday for his first visit to Ethiopia since January 2015, signaling a renewed focus on strengthening Turkey-Ethiopia relations.
President Erdoğan was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, ahead of comprehensive bilateral talks aimed at deepening political and economic cooperation between Ankara and Addis Ababa.
Prime Minister Abiy described the visit as a testament to the “strong partnership between Ethiopia and Turkey,” emphasizing the shared commitment to enhanced collaboration in trade, investment, and diplomacy.
During his 2015 visit, President Erdoğan was awarded an honorary doctorate by Addis Ababa University, highlighting his longstanding engagement with Ethiopia’s academic and political circles.
This visit follows Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s 2024 trip to Turkey, where he held talks with Erdoğan and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, amid rising tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia. Analysts expect Erdoğan’s visit to further consolidate regional cooperation and address mutual economic interests.
