Ghana set to begin construction of nation’s tallest bridge with Japanese-backed technology

Ghana is set to break ground on the Volivo Bridge, a major infrastructure project that will become the country’s tallest road bridge, following high-level discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza described the talks with JICA’s
Head of Africa Investment, Yushi Nagano, as highly productive, stating, “God willing, President Mahama will break ground this year for the construction of the bridge itself.
The planned 540‑metre cable-stayed bridge, featuring a 280‑metre main span and 51‑metre towers, two traffic lanes, sidewalks, and safety railings, will surpass the length of the Adomi Bridge by 200 metres.

Once completed, it will set records as Ghana’s tallest bridge towers and longest cable-stayed span, establishing the Volivo Bridge as a major engineering landmark in the Eastern Corridor.

The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the Volta and Oti regions, boosting trade, mobility, and regional economic integration.
JICA’s involvement showcases Japan’s continuing commitment to infrastructure development in Africa, combining financing, technical expertise, and project management support.

The Volivo Bridge is part of Ghana’s broader strategy to modernize critical transport corridors and stimulate economic growth .
