Heavy Rain Batters Egypt, Disrupting School Day and Commutes

Heavy rain swept across various parts of Egypt in the early hours of Sunday as the country continued to experience a spell of unstable weather. The downpour brought widespread traffic congestion, disrupting the school day across Greater Cairo governorates.
The showers affected several regions, including Greater Cairo, the Suez Canal cities, the eastern Delta, parts of Upper Egypt, the Gulf of Suez, and Sinai. Strong winds accompanied the rain across most areas, stirring up sand and dust.
The Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia governorates called off school on Sunday morning, with many students — most of whom had monthly exams — already on their way when the decision was made, further snarling traffic. The governorates said any exams scheduled for the day would be postponed to next week.
However, Education Minister Mohamed Abdel-Latif issued a directive to all schools in the three governorates to continue the school day for students whose parents were unable to collect them, and to hold off on any exams. He also stressed that no student should be left outside school premises until picked up by a parent or guardian.
On Saturday, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) warned of rainfall of varying intensity across several areas of the country, cautioning that conditions would remain unsettled.
The authority said showers are expected to continue over the coming hours before gradually easing throughout the day.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution, warning residents to stay clear of light poles and to drive carefully on wet roads.
