U.S. State Department Designates Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Organization
The U.S. Department of State has officially designated the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) organization, while also announcing plans to classify it as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) effective March 16, 2026, in a move that signals Washington’s intensifying efforts to combat terrorism in Sudan.
Commenting on the decision, Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President on African Affairs, affirmed that the United States will employ all available tools to counter terrorism, confront malign Iranian influence, and hold accountable those responsible for crimes committed against Sudanese civilians.
Massad Boulos: The Sudanese People Have Paid a Heavy Price for the Conflict
In a post on the social media platform X, Boulos stated that under the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump, and with the designation of Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, Washington will continue deploying every available measure to confront extremist threats that undermine stability in Sudan and across the region.
Boulos emphasized that the Sudanese people have endured immense suffering due to the ongoing conflict, noting that civilians have borne the brunt of the violence and serious abuses committed by the parties involved in the war.
He added that the prolonged conflict has significantly worsened Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, underscoring the urgent need for international action to alleviate the suffering faced by millions of civilians across the country.
U.S. Calls for Immediate Humanitarian Ceasefire
The senior U.S. advisor stressed that the time has come for all parties to the conflict to agree to an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, allowing critical aid to reach civilians affected by the war.
He explained that such a ceasefire could pave the way for renewed political dialogue among the warring parties, creating conditions that may help end the conflict and guide Sudan toward stability.
Boulos also highlighted the importance of intensified international efforts to support the Sudanese population during what he described as an extremely critical phase in the country’s history.
State Department: Group Used Excessive Violence Against Civilians
In its official statement, the U.S. State Department said the decision to designate the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood was based on its involvement in acts of extreme violence against civilians, aimed at undermining international efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan.
The statement noted that the group employed excessive force and carried out operations targeting civilians in an attempt to expand its influence and spread its extremist Islamist ideology within the country.
According to the department, such activities pose a direct threat to Sudan’s stability and security while obstructing international initiatives seeking a political resolution to the crisis.
Links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
The statement further revealed that fighters associated with the group had received training and support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), adding that some of its members were involved in mass executions of civilians during the ongoing conflict.
The U.S. State Department also pointed out that Iran, which Washington accuses of being a leading state sponsor of terrorism, has financed and directed malign activities across the globe through the IRGC.
The statement stressed that the United States will continue using every available instrument to prevent Iran and affiliated groups from obtaining the resources necessary to carry out or support terrorist operations.
Previous Sanctions on the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade
The statement also recalled that the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, affiliated with Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood, had already been placed under U.S. sanctions in September 2025 pursuant to Executive Order 14098.
The sanctions were imposed due to the brigade’s involvement in the ongoing war in Sudan and its alleged role in acts of violence and abuses that Washington described as part of the brutal conflict devastating the country.
The State Department emphasized that the designation of the group and its affiliated entities forms part of broader international efforts aimed at combating terrorism and disrupting its sources of funding.
Military Developments: Preparations for Operations in Darfur and Kordofan
Meanwhile, on the ground in Sudan, Darfur Regional Governor Minni Arko Minawi announced that the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Joint Force are preparing to advance against militia strongholds.
Minawi stated that the forces are ready to continue what he described as the “Battle of Dignity”, with the objective of liberating the entire regions of Darfur and Kordofan from the control of the Janjaweed militias.
He explained that the ongoing military operations are part of a broader strategy aimed at regaining control over territories that have witnessed intense fighting in recent months.
Minawi: Advance Will Continue City by City
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Minawi affirmed that the path taken by the forces is clear and irreversible, stressing that military operations will continue until the militias surrender.
He said the forces will advance city after city until the militias withdraw from homes they occupied by force, adding that these houses were seized unjustly from Sudanese citizens during the conflict.
Minawi further emphasized that those responsible for crimes committed against the Sudanese people must ultimately be brought before justice.
Rising Morale After the Liberation of Bara
Minawi also noted that the morale of the troops has risen significantly following the liberation of the city of Bara, describing the development as a major boost for fighters engaged in the ongoing battles.
He stated that the forces have become even more determined to continue advancing in the coming stages of the campaign.
The Darfur governor concluded his remarks by asserting that the forces will not retreat if the confrontation continues, stressing that their only option would be to carry on with the fight until their objectives are achieved.
He ended his statement with the slogan: “No retreat, no compromise… victory or victory.”
