Rabat / MENA /
The eyes of African football fans will be firmly fixed on the cities of Tangier and Rabat tomorrow, Wednesday, as two highly anticipated clashes take place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with the tournament nearing its decisive moment. Only four teams remain in the race for the final tickets: Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, and Senegal.
Egypt will meet Senegal at the Grand Stadium of Tangier, while host nation Morocco will face Nigeria in the capital, Rabat.
Time: The Invisible Player in the AFCON Semi-Finals
At this critical stage of the tournament, time emerges as a decisive and unforgiving player, indifferent to history, reputation, or the journey teams have taken to reach this point. Time reveals itself only when bodies grow weary and certainties begin to crack, subjecting all four semi-finalists to a ruthless test in the decisive minutes.
Egypt: Tournament Experience Against the Pressure of the Moment
Egypt enter the semi-final fully aware of the nature of such moments, having confronted the challenge of time countless times throughout their continental history. The Pharaohs know how to close spaces, absorb pressure, and exhaust their opponents until the minutes tilt in their favor.
Yet Egypt also understands that experience alone is not enough, as time punishes even the smallest lapse in a match that allows no margin for error.
Senegal: Mature Confidence Under Time’s Scrutiny
On the other side, Senegal approach the encounter with mature confidence, fully conscious of their physical and technical strength. However, time watches them closely, knowing that confidence can quickly turn into a trap if the final minutes are not managed with extreme caution.
The clash renews a fierce rivalry following the 2022 AFCON final, which Senegal won on penalties, while Egypt, the tournament’s most successful nation with seven titles, seek to end a run of runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2022.
Salah vs. Mané: A Clash of Stars
Senegal rely heavily on their talisman Sadio Mané, who has scored once and provided three assists in the current tournament, while Egypt look to captain Mohamed Salah, who has netted four goals so far, as he aims to add another continental title to his illustrious career.
Morocco vs. Nigeria: A Collision of Ambition and Destiny
In the other semi-final, attention turns to the showdown between Morocco and Nigeria. The Super Eagles arrive buoyed by an impressive 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals, sending a clear message about their readiness to contend for the title.
Nigeria boast the tournament’s most potent attack, scoring 14 goals in five matches, and are aiming to become the first team to score at least two goals in six consecutive matches in a single AFCON edition. They also seek to reach the final for the ninth time in their history, achieving back-to-back final appearances for the second time since 1988 and 1990.
Morocco: Home Advantage and a 50-Year Wait
However, Nigeria’s task will be anything but easy against Morocco, who are chasing a historic milestone of four consecutive clean-sheet victories for the first time in AFCON history, following their 2–0 quarter-final win over Cameroon.
The Atlas Lions rely on their defensive solidity and their ability to score consistently, having found the net in 18 consecutive matches, placing them in a strong position to end a 50-year wait for continental glory, backed by home soil and passionate supporters.
Lookman and Osimhen: Nigeria’s Trump Cards
Nigeria’s attacking threat is spearheaded by Ademola Lookman, the Atalanta star who has contributed to 11 goals across the last two AFCON editions, alongside Victor Osimhen, the Galatasaray striker and scorer of four goals in the current tournament. Morocco, meanwhile, count on their star-studded squad to fully exploit the advantage of playing at home and in front of their fans.
A Semi-Final Beyond Entertainment
In the AFCON 2025 semi-finals, success is not measured by flair or aesthetic dominance, but by the ability to survive and endure in matches governed by experience, pressure, and the relentless passage of time.
When the final whistle blows, time will show no mercy and make no judgments of fairness or merit. Only two teams will remain standing on the stage of history, while the other two will carry the weight of a heavy night etched forever into African football’s collective memory.
