African Union Reaffirms Commitment to Sudan’s Sovereignty and Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

The African Union has once again reaffirmed its firm commitment to respecting Sudan’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity. It emphasized its continued dedication to accompanying the Sudanese people in their legitimate and persistent pursuit of restoring peace, security, stability, development, and democratic governance, as well as achieving a consensual and peaceful resolution to the challenges confronting their country.

In a statement issued by the African Union Peace and Security Council following its ministerial-level meeting held yesterday under the Egyptian chairmanship on the situation in Sudan, the African Union expressed its profound concern over the ongoing armed conflict in the country. The conflict, the statement noted, has resulted in significant loss of life, widespread destruction of infrastructure, reversal of development gains, and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe across Sudan.

The Peace and Security Council further expressed grave concern regarding the deteriorating humanitarian and economic conditions, particularly the reported famine and hunger in several parts of the country, especially in El Fasher. It demanded unhindered humanitarian access to populations in need and underscored the necessity of ensuring the protection of humanitarian personnel and agencies. The Council strongly condemned all forms of violations committed against civilians by parties to the armed conflict, including those perpetrated in El Fasher by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, such as systematic killings, mass displacement, ethnically motivated targeting, and destruction of infrastructure. It stressed that those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law will be held accountable.

The statement called for prioritizing Sudan’s supreme national interests and urged the swift and full restoration of a democratically elected, civilian-led government in accordance with the instruments and decisions of the African Union. It further emphasized the need to respect and prioritize the interests of Sudanese citizens by giving peace a genuine opportunity.

The African Union renewed its call for a humanitarian truce leading to an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for the launch of an inclusive, Sudanese-led dialogue process. Such a process, it noted, must address both the security and political dimensions of the crisis, tackle the structural root causes of the conflict, and lead to a consensual and lasting solution. The Union reiterated that there can be no viable or sustainable military solution to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The African Union welcomed the progress made through the presentation of the Sudanese National Peace Initiative by the Prime Minister of the Sudanese Transitional Government on 22 December 2025. The initiative calls for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, protection of civilians, unhindered humanitarian access, support for refugees and internally displaced persons, disarmament, security sector reform, national reconciliation, and reconstruction. The Union emphasized that these elements are essential to rebuilding trust, repairing the social fabric, consolidating state unity, and restoring stability. It called for the full implementation of the initiative in line with the African Union Roadmap for resolving the conflict in Sudan.

In this context, the African Union called on the Sudanese authorities and political forces, in close coordination with relevant stakeholders, to ensure that the transitional process becomes more inclusive so as to reach consensual arrangements reflecting the aspirations of the Sudanese people and enabling a smooth return to constitutional order through elections. It encouraged the Sudanese authorities to continue the effective implementation of the National Peace Initiative.

The statement also called for the resumption of a comprehensive Sudanese dialogue focused on reconciliation and the pursuit of an amicable political solution, under the auspices of an African Union-led process and in coordination with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations, neighboring countries, and other regional and international peace support mechanisms, including the Quad and Quint frameworks. These efforts are aimed at supporting de-escalation, securing a humanitarian truce, achieving a cessation of hostilities, and ultimately restoring peace and stability in Sudan. In this regard, the Council requested the African Union Commission, IGAD, and neighboring states to continue engaging civilian actors in order to advance an inclusive Sudanese dialogue process.

The statement reaffirmed the central role of African Union leadership in the Sudan peace process and welcomed the efforts of the Quint Group—comprising the African Union  .
