Egypt vs Angola: AFCON Head-to-Head History

This encounter marks the third meeting between Egypt and Angola in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. In their previous two AFCON encounters, the Egyptian national team emerged victorious on both occasions.

AFCON 1996

The first meeting between the two sides in the Africa Cup of Nations finals took place in 1996, during the group stage. It also marked Angola’s first-ever participation in the tournament. The match was played on 15 January 1996, with Egypt claiming a 2–1 victory. Ahmed El Kass scored both goals for Egypt, while Quinzinho netted Angola’s first goal in their AFCON history.

AFCON 2008

The teams met again in the quarter-finals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Kumasi, Ghana, where Egypt once more secured a 2–1 win. Hossam Abd Rabou opened the scoring for Egypt from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, before Manucho equalised for Angola. Amr Zaki then scored the winning goal in the 36th minute, as Egypt went on to successfully defend their continental title.

Most Recent Encounters

The most recent meetings between Egypt and Angola came during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

  • In the first leg, played in Cairo on 21 September 2021, Egypt won 1–0, with Mohamed Magdy converting a penalty in the fifth minute.
  • The return leg in Luanda ended in a 2–2 draw, with Angola taking a 2–0 lead through goals from Hélder Costa in the 26th minute and a penalty by Mbala Nzola in the 36th minute. Egypt responded with goals from Mohamed Elneny in the 45th minute and Akram Tawfik in the 59th minute.

Overall Head-to-Head Record

Overall, this match represents the ninth encounter between the two national teams. The Egyptian national team remain unbeaten against Angola, having recorded four wins and four draws in all previous meetings.

Today’s match is therefore of particular significance, as Angola aim to make history by reaching the knockout stages, while Egypt look to maintain their strong performances ahead of the decisive stages of the continental tournament.
