Mojtaba Khamenei Named Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic
Iran’s Assembly of Experts has announced, by an overwhelming majority vote, the appointment of Ayatollah Hojjatoleslam Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in a U.S. airstrike targeting Iran.
The decision represents a major shift in the country’s political and religious leadership structure, making Mojtaba Khamenei the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
According to Tasnim International News Agency, the Assembly of Experts formally declared Mojtaba Khamenei the new leader of the Islamic Republic after a vote in which he secured an overwhelming majority among council members.
The Assembly of Experts is the constitutional body responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader of Iran and overseeing his performance in accordance with the country’s constitution.
Official Statement from the Assembly of Experts
Following the announcement, the Assembly of Experts released an official statement expressing condolences to the Iranian people over the death of the former Supreme Leader and other victims of the attack.
The statement read:
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
To the honorable and free Muslim people of Iran, peace and God’s mercy and blessings be upon you.
The Assembly of Experts extends its deepest condolences on the martyrdom of the great leader, Grand Ayatollah Imam Khamenei (may God sanctify his pure soul), as well as other beloved martyrs, especially the senior self-sacrificing commanders of the armed forces and the students of the “Shajarat Tayyiba” school in the city of Minab.
Condemnation of the U.S. and Israel
The statement also strongly condemned what it described as a “brutal aggression” carried out by the United States and the “Zionist entity,” saying the attack resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including senior military commanders and other figures.
The Assembly of Experts stressed that the Islamic Republic would continue its path despite the challenges, emphasizing that the Iranian people remain committed to the principles and values of the Islamic Revolution.
A New Phase in Iran’s Leadership
The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei comes at a time of rising political and security tensions across the Middle East, making the leadership transition in Iran a development of significant regional and international importance.
Observers say the coming period will be critical in shaping the direction of Iran’s domestic and foreign policies under the country’s new leadership, as geopolitical dynamics across the region continue to evolve.
