Guinean Football Federation Denies Appeal on 1976 Africa Cup of Nations Result

FGF Refutes Recent Rumors About Contesting 1976 Match Result

The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) officially informs the public, both nationally and internationally, that it has not initiated any procedures before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or the Confederation of African Football (CAF) concerning the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations.

Recent reports circulating on social media and other platforms suggesting that Guinea intended to challenge the outcome of the match between its national team, the Syli National, and Morocco are entirely false.

The FGF stresses that these claims are inaccurate, unverified, and lack any official basis.

Historical Match Details: Guinea vs Morocco, 14 March 1976

The FGF recalls that the match took place on 14 March 1976 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the supervision of Zambian referee Nyirenda Chayu.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw. Guinea opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Chérif Souleymane, before Morocco equalized in the 86th minute via Ahmed Makrouh, famously known as “Baba.”

1976 Africa Cup of Nations Format Explained

At the time, the tournament did not include a traditional final.

  • Teams first competed in a group stage.
  • Qualified teams then entered a final group stage, effectively a mini-league.
  • The final standings of this group determined the tournament champion.

Under this format, Morocco finished at the top of the final group, earning the championship title, while Guinea secured second place.

Commitment to Historical Accuracy and Sports Integrity

The FGF reaffirms its dedication to respecting historical facts and official football regulations.

It calls on media outlets and football stakeholders to rely on verified information and to avoid sharing content that could create confusion or misinterpretation.

Promoting Fair Play and Unity in African Football

The Guinean Football Federation continues to champion fair play, mutual respect, and unity within African football.

It encourages all football fans and journalists to prioritize accurate reporting and to celebrate the sport’s shared values.
