FM Discusses Developments in Occupied Palestinian Territories and the Region with Palestinian Vice President
A phone call took place between Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates, and Mr. Hussein Al-Sheikh, Vice President of Palestine. The discussion reviewed developments in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as well as the overall situation in the region in light of the current military escalation.
The Foreign Minister expressed Egypt’s condemnation of the recent annexation decisions in the West Bank and the expansion of settlement activities, stressing that they constitute a flagrant violation of international law and international legitimacy resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334.
Dr. Abdelatty emphasized that such actions undermine the prospects for achieving the two-state solution and threaten stability in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Regarding the situation in Gaza Strip, Minister Abdelatty reiterated the importance of expediting the empowerment of the National Committee for Administration of Gaza to assume its duties from within the Strip. He noted the importance of this pivotal step in managing the transitional phase and consolidating the ceasefire, which would ultimately enable the Palestinian Authority to fully assume its responsibilities in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank following the end of the transitional period.
Dr. Abdelatty further underscored the significance of deploying the International Stabilization Force to monitor the ceasefire and support early recovery and reconstruction efforts, thereby contributing to improving humanitarian conditions and creating a conducive environment for the resumption of the political process.
The call also touched on developments related to the military escalation in the region. Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt’s evaluation of the situation, emphasizing the need to de-escalate and prioritize diplomatic solutions before matters spiral out of control, given the serious repercussions that continued tensions could have on regional and international peace and security. He stressed the importance of respecting state sovereignty and the principles of good neighborliness, exercising the utmost restraint, and intensifying regional and international efforts to contain tensions and prevent the conflict from expanding.
For his part, Mr. Hussein Al-Sheikh expressed appreciation for Egypt’s continued efforts in support of the Palestinian cause, affirming the importance of maintaining coordination and consultation with Egypt during the upcoming period.
