Egyptian Foreign Minister Participates in the High-Level Conference of High Contracting Parties to the TAC with the ASEAN
Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates, participated on Friday, July 24, in the High-Level Conference of High Contracting Parties to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Manila, the Philippines.
Minister Abdelatty’s participation in the conference aligns with Egypt’s foreign policy orientation towards reinforcing its engagement with active regional blocs, topped by the ASEAN, and bolstering its relations with Southeast Asian countries. This would contribute to expanding the scope of political, economic, and developmental cooperation, and advancing coordination and consultation on regional and international issues of common interest, in light of the growing role played by the ASEAN in supporting security, stability, and development.
The Foreign Minister delivered a speech during the conference, in which he outlined Egypt’s vision for promoting preventive diplomacy and conflict prevention.
He asserted that the world is facing increased challenges due to the escalation of crises and disputes and their increasingly complex dimensions. He pointed out that this necessitates enhanced joint international action in order to address the root causes of conflicts and mitigate their repercussions, which are no longer confined to the countries experiencing them but encompass international peace and security, economic stability, and development efforts, particularly in developing countries.
The Foreign Minister further expressed that Egypt believes that preventive diplomacy constitutes one of the main tools for maintaining security and stability, He stated that its success requires adopting a comprehensive approach founded on supporting nation-state institutions, promoting socio-economic development, peacebuilding, and addressing the root causes of conflicts to prevent their outbreak or recurrence.
Dr. Abdelatty reaffirmed the importance of boosting multilateralism and supporting the role played by the United Nations and regional organizations, most notably the African Union, the League of Arab States, and the ASEAN, in a manner that fosters the international community’s ability to respond to shared challenges, while taking into account the priorities and needs of developing countries. He also highlighted the need to continue efforts aimed at reforming the global financial architecture and increasing investments in development, infrastructure, and basic services, being key elements for supporting stability and tackling the root causes of conflict.
Minister Abdelatty further noted the importance of strengthening international cooperation in confronting transnational challenges, particularly terrorism and organized crime, through respecting the sovereignty of states, enhancing information sharing, drying up sources of terrorist financing, supporting peacebuilding and national reconciliation efforts, and bolstering a culture of dialogue and tolerance, which would contribute to fostering the stability of societies and protecting them from the dangers of extremism and violence.
The Foreign Minister concluded his remarks by affirming that investing in preventive diplomacy, consolidating multilateralism, and entrenching the values of moderation and tolerance through religious institutions and responsible media are all fundamental pillars for building a more stable global order, better equipped to address ongoing challenges, in a manner that achieves international peace and security, and supports sustainable development paths.
