100 Sudanese refugees return from Uganda to Port Sudan under the voluntary return program

Port Sudan Airport received, yesterday, 100 Sudanese refugees as part of the third group of Sudanese refugees returning from the Republic of Uganda under the voluntary repatriation program adopted by the state to facilitate the return of its citizens.

The returnees were welcomed by Major General (Ret.) Abdelkarim Yousif Yaqoub, Head of the Higher Committee for Voluntary Repatriation. In a press statement carried by the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), he  that this flight comes ongoing national efforts aimed at repatriating Sudanese citizens from abroad. He noted that the Sudanese government has fully adopted the project, with support from its various state institutions.

Yaqoub further explained that efforts will continue to expand the program, providing opportunities for the remaining Sudanese nationals in Uganda who wish to return home, stressing the commitment of the relevant authorities to facilitate procedures and ensure a safe and dignified return.

For his part, Mawlana Yahya Hashim, a member of the Higher Committee for the Voluntary Repatriation of Sudanese Refugees in Uganda and its legal advisor, stated that the initiative was launched in response to the conditions faced by Sudanese nationals in Uganda, with the aim of easing their return home. He highlighted that the program is supported by the Sovereignty Council and the Ministry of Finance.

He added that several dedicated flights have been arranged to facilitate the voluntary return process, praising the efforts of national airlines—foremost among them Sudan Airways, Tarco Aviation, and Badr Airlines—for their significant role in ensuring the success of the initiative and facilitating transportation.

Hashim also expressed hope that the voluntary repatriation program will be expanded to include more countries, as part of the broader national initiative sponsored by the state, with the goal of repatriating as many Sudanese nationals abroad as possible.

Meanwhile, a number of returnees from Uganda expressed their deep appreciation for the efforts made under the voluntary repatriation program, commending all involved in facilitating their return. They also praised the Higher Committee for its considerable efforts in easing travel and return procedures, expressing great happiness upon arriving back in their homeland.
