ASEAN Summit Prioritizes Energy, Food Security, and National Safety

ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn highlighted the critical outcomes of the 48th ASEAN Summit on Monday, emphasizing a unified regional focus on energy security, food stability, and the protection of ASEAN nationals globally.

Following the summit’s conclusion in the Philippines, Kao noted that regional leaders have called for the swift ratification of the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement and the full operationalization of the ASEAN Power Grid to facilitate cross-border electricity trade.

These measures are designed to ensure a stable, affordable, and reliable energy supply while accelerating the bloc’s transition toward renewable energy sources across its 11 member states.
In addressing food security, the summit urged for open, predictable markets and strengthened supply chain connectivity to safeguard regional food reserves.

Amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, ASEAN leaders issued a dedicated statement outlining a comprehensive framework to bolster regional resilience in finance, energy, and supply chains. A key priority underscored during the meetings was the safety of ASEAN citizens abroad, with leaders committing to enhanced protective measures.

This strategic alignment aims to insulate the region from external shocks and solidify ASEAN’s collective capacity to navigate global economic and geopolitical volatility.
