Morocco Thrash Canada 3-0 to Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Quarter-Finals

Atlas Lions Continue Historic World Cup Journey with Convincing Victory Over Canada
The Moroccan national football team booked its place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing an emphatic 3-0 victory over Canada in their Round of 16 clash on Saturday at Houston Stadium.
The Atlas Lions delivered another impressive performance to continue their remarkable World Cup campaign and move one step closer to another historic achievement on football’s biggest stage.
Heading into what head coach Mohamed Ouahbi described as Morocco’s “most difficult match” of the tournament, the Atlas Lions made only one change to their starting lineup.
Redouane Halhal was handed a starting role in place of Shadi Riad, who missed the crucial knockout encounter after sustaining an injury during Morocco’s previous victory over the Netherlands.
Canada began the match aggressively, applying early pressure in an attempt to unsettle Morocco’s defense.
However, Atlas Lions goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced an outstanding save to deny a dangerous corner kick that was curled directly toward goal. Moments later, he was called into action again, making another superb intervention to stop a threatening attack launched down Canada’s left flank.
Bounou Shines Again as Morocco Suffer Early Injury Blow
As the first half progressed, Canada continued pressing high up the pitch and created one of the game’s clearest scoring opportunities when forward Tani Oluwaseyi broke through on goal.
Bounou once again demonstrated his world-class qualities by producing another brilliant save to preserve Morocco’s clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Morocco suffered an unexpected setback due to Canada’s physical approach. In the 21st minute, midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced off through injury, prompting Mohamed Ouahbi to introduce Sofiane Rahimi as an early substitute.
The opening half was characterized by Canada’s disciplined tactical display under head coach Jesse Marsch.
The Canadian side successfully disrupted Morocco’s attacking rhythm by closing down spaces and limiting the influence of the Atlas Lions’ creative players.
Canada also relied on quick transitions and rapid counterattacks immediately after regaining possession, placing Morocco’s defensive line under constant pressure throughout the first 45 minutes.
Azzedine Ounahi Breaks the Deadlock Early in the Second Half
Morocco returned after halftime with renewed determination and needed only five minutes to take the lead.
In the 50th minute, Azzedine Ounahi opened the scoring after intelligently capitalizing on a cleverly executed low free-kick from Achraf Hakimi.
The delivery passed just beyond Sofiane Rahimi, who wisely allowed the ball to continue its path, deceiving the Canadian goalkeeper before Ounahi struck a precise right-footed shot from more than 17 meters outside the penalty area into the back of the net.
Morocco Take Control as Mohamed Ouahbi Refreshes His Squad
Following the opening goal, Morocco gained complete control of the match by dominating possession and patiently building attacks from the back.
Seeking to maintain his team’s momentum, Mohamed Ouahbi introduced fresh legs by bringing on Chamseddine Talbi and Sofyan Amrabat in place of Bilal El Khannouss and Ayoub Bouaddi.
Determined to find an equalizer, Canada pushed more players forward, leaving significant gaps in defense.
Morocco efficiently exploited those spaces through quick counterattacks, repeatedly threatening the Canadian goal and creating several dangerous scoring opportunities.
Ounahi Scores His Second to Double Morocco’s Advantage
The Atlas Lions made full use of Canada’s defensive vulnerability as Azzedine Ounahi struck again inside the penalty area.
The move began with an excellent pass from Brahim Diaz before Ounahi calmly finished an outstanding team move to score his second goal of the evening and double Morocco’s lead.
The goal once again highlighted the success of the Mohammed VI Football Academy, with Ounahi standing among its most distinguished graduates and serving as another example of Morocco’s flourishing football development system.
Moments later, Sofiane Rahimi came close to adding a third goal after meeting a perfectly delivered cross with a powerful header.
However, the crossbar came to Canada’s rescue, denying the Moroccan forward what seemed a certain goal.
Deep into stoppage time, Rahimi finally found the net.
The Moroccan forward scored the Atlas Lions’ third goal in the eighth minute of added time (90+8), capping a dominant team performance and confirming Morocco’s deserved qualification for the quarter-finals.
Morocco Await Winner of France vs Paraguay
With the comprehensive victory, Morocco secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will now face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between France and Paraguay.
The Atlas Lions will be aiming to continue their historic World Cup run and move one step closer to another unforgettable achievement on the global stage.
