President El Sis: Egypt Hosts Over 10.5 Million Foreigners, Migrants and Refugees

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received today Mr. Barham Salih, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Ambassador Mohamed El Shinawy, the Official Spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, stated that the President affirmed the importance of Egypt’s cooperation with the UNHCR in providing international protection for refugees and asylum seekers residing in Egypt, and in managing the asylum process in accordance with national legislation governing this matter.
Ambassador El Shinawy noted that the President reviewed the efforts undertaken by Egypt through hosting more than ten and a half million foreigners, migrants, and refugees of various nationalities, against the backdrop of numerous international and regional crises.

He emphasized the State’s commitment to providing essential services to them within its capacities, while ensuring respect for Egyptian law and international obligations.

The President underscored the importance of activating the principle of burden- and responsibility-sharing, increasing international support directed to Egypt, and supporting the new national asylum system whose executive frameworks are currently being finalized to address refugee issues.
The Spokesperson added that the High Commissioner expressed the UNHCR’s keenness to strengthen its longstanding cooperation with the Egyptian government. He praised Egypt’s considerable efforts in hosting millions of foreigners, migrants, and refugees, welcomed the steps taken by the Egyptian State to establish the new national asylum system, and commended the creation of the Permanent Committee for Refugee Affairs..
