Abdelatty, Tanzanian Foreign Minister Discuss Nile Water Security, Bilateral Relations
Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and Tanzanian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo on Saturday, September 19, discussed Nile water security, stressing the importance of cooperation and integration over the Nile River to achieve shared benefits and mutual interests.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, where the two ministers also addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest.
Minister Abdelatty underscored the importance of adhering to the spirit of consensus and fraternity in order to restore inclusivity to the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), while rejecting unilateral measures.
He also welcomed the positive developments in the NBI’s consultative process aimed at restoring inclusivity in accordance with international law, thereby achieving mutual benefit for all Nile Basin states.
Ambassador Nader Zaki, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the two ministers commended the growing momentum in bilateral relations between Egypt and Tanzania.
The momentum was demonstrated by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Tanzania last July, as well as the participation of the Egyptian Prime Minister in the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Dam project, which was implemented by Egyptian companies in Tanzania and represents a successful model of strategic partnership between the two countries.
During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty also invited Tanzania to participate in the Alamein-Africa Forum, scheduled to take place from October 2 to 4 in New El Alamein City, on the sidelines of the African Union’s 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
