Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Ukraine and Russia are nearing a settlement over the Donbas region, emphasizing that significant progress has been made in recent months to halt the war in Ukraine.
Trump shared these remarks with the Associated Press on Monday after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Florida resort. He noted that reaching a Donbas agreement is complex, but ongoing efforts aim to achieve a resolution soon.
According to Trump, “Ukraine and Russia are closer than ever to a peace agreement,” adding that Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed.
The statements followed a high-level meeting between the two leaders, which occurred after what Trump described as an “excellent” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin lasting two and a half hours. Trump reiterated his belief that Putin still desires peace, despite Russia launching a new wave of military operations in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky announced that Trump has agreed to host European leaders again, possibly at the White House in January. Trump mentioned that the meeting could be held in Washington or elsewhere, while Zelensky thanked Trump for his efforts, stating: “Ukraine is ready for peace.”
