Burkina Faso Cuts Diplomatic Relations with France

Burkina Faso has officially announced the severance of its diplomatic relations with France, marking another significant shift in the relationship between Paris and the countries of the Sahel region.

Speaking on state television on Friday, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Communication, Gilbert Ouédraogo, said that Ouagadougou had decided to cut diplomatic ties with Paris due to what he described as France’s failure to uphold the principles of mutual respect and non-interference in Burkina Faso’s internal affairs.

Nigerien Analyst: Burkina Faso Is Following the Path of Mali and Niger

In exclusive remarks to Afro News 24, Nigerien journalist and media analyst Mohamed Sidi said that Burkina Faso’s decision follows the same course previously taken by Mali and Niger, both of which severed diplomatic relations with France after the military coups that took place in those countries.

He explained that Burkina Faso had maintained diplomatic relations with France while the other Sahel states had already cut ties with Paris. However, the latest developments prompted Ouagadougou to take the same step.

Accusations of Interference in Internal Affairs

Mohamed Sidi stated that Burkina Faso justified its decision by citing what it considers French interference in the country’s internal affairs. At the same time, he emphasized that Burkina Faso remains open to cooperation with all countries willing to establish partnerships based on mutual respect and non-interference in its domestic affairs.

He added that, following a review of several issues, the Burkinabè authorities concluded that France had been interfering in the country’s internal affairs and engaging in activities that were not stipulated in the agreements between Burkina Faso and France.

Accordingly, Burkina Faso announced to the international community that it had decided to completely and permanently sever diplomatic relations with France.

A Predictable Decision Amid Growing Tensions

Sidi stressed that the decision should not come as a surprise, noting that Burkina Faso has repeatedly accused France of interfering in its domestic affairs.

He further stated that both Burkina Faso and Niger have consistently alleged that France supports and finances terrorism while interfering in their internal affairs. Therefore, he said, the decision to sever diplomatic ties with Paris was widely anticipated given the persistent tensions between the two sides.

A New Chapter in the Sahel’s Geopolitical Landscape

The decision reflects the continuing political and geopolitical transformation taking place across the Sahel region, as member states increasingly seek to redefine their foreign relations and build new international partnerships based on the principles of national sovereignty, mutual respect, and non-interference in domestic affairs, according to their official statements.
