Kenya Flood Crisis Intensifies as Landslides Claim 18 Lives Across Three Counties

The Kenyan National Police Service has reported a rising death toll as relentless seasonal rains trigger a wave of lethal floods and landslides across the country’s central and eastern regions. As of May 3, 2026, eighteen fatalities have been confirmed, with the most severe damage concentrated in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu counties.
The ongoing weather crisis, coinciding with the peak of the March-to-May rainy season, has caused widespread displacement and significant structural failure,  National police officials issued a stark statement emphasizing the grave danger currently posed by the saturated terrain, which remains susceptible to further landslides.

According to official reports from Reuters, the sustained heavy rainfall has not only claimed lives but has also decimated critical infrastructure, rendering several positions virtually unusable for local transport and emergency services.
In the affected highlands, the surge in water levels has turned peaceful landscapes into formidable hazards, complicating rescue and relief efforts.

Meteorological data suggests that the peak of the rainfall season has yet to subside, necessitating heightened vigilance among communities living on steep slopes and near riverbanks. As the humanitarian impact continues to grow, the government remains under pressure to fortify its emergency response and provide immediate sanctuary for those displaced by the unforgiving elements.
