African Teams Close In on Historic World Cup Milestone

Africa’s representatives delivered a series of eye-catching performances in the second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, with Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Ghana strengthening their positions as the continent moves closer to achieving its best-ever collective performance at a World Cup.
The 10 African teams participating in the tournament recorded three victories, three draws and four defeats during the second round. African sides scored 11 goals while conceding 13.
However, Tunisia and Senegal continued to struggle, with both teams suffering their second consecutive defeats of the tournament. Tunisia’s 4-0 loss to Japan was the heaviest defeat suffered by an African side in the second round and followed an earlier 5-1 defeat against Sweden in their opening match. Senegal also endured a second straight loss, leaving its qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
With the decisive third and final round of group-stage matches set to begin across the United States, Canada and Mexico, African teams now have a realistic opportunity to break the continent’s record for the number of nations reaching the knockout rounds of a World Cup. At least five African teams remain in contention for qualification, a feat that would surpass Africa’s previous best collective performance.
The continent’s strongest World Cup showing came in 2014, when Algeria, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire all advanced beyond the group stage. Twelve years later, that benchmark appears under serious threat.
Egypt Secure Historic Victory and Top Group G

South Africa Keep Their Hopes Alive
South Africa missed an opportunity to secure their first World Cup victory after drawing 1-1 with the Czech Republic in Atlanta.

Tunisia officially exited the tournament after suffering a crushing 4-0 defeat to Japan.
The loss followed a 5-1 defeat to Sweden in the opening round, making this one of the most disappointing World Cup campaigns in the nation’s history.
The Eagles of Carthage have conceded nine goals and scored just once in two matches, leaving them without any chance of progressing before their final group encounter against the Netherlands.
Although already eliminated, Tunisia will hope to restore some pride when they face the Dutch side in their final appearance at the tournament.
