Africa’s World Cup 2026 Hopes Fade as Morocco Reaches Last 16 Alone Triumphantly

Morocco Keeps African Dream Alive in FIFA World Cup 2026

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 delivered a disappointing chapter for African football, with five of the continent’s representatives eliminated from the tournament, Morocco emerged as the only African nation to secure a place in the Round of 16, preserving hopes of another historic World Cup campaign after its groundbreaking semifinal appearance at Qatar 2022.

African football fans entered the knockout stage with high expectations following an impressive group-stage performance by several teams. However, the first six Round of 32 matches produced only one African victory, leaving Morocco as the sole confirmed representative in the next round.

Attention now shifts to Egypt, Cape Verde, and Ghana, which were scheduled to play their Round of 32 fixtures against Australia, defending champions Argentina, and Colombia, respectively. Their performances will determine whether Africa can increase its representation in the Round of 16.

Morocco Eliminates Netherlands in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Morocco once again demonstrated its resilience on football’s biggest stage by defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a dramatic 1-1 draw following extra time in Monterrey.

The Dutch side appeared on course for victory after Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 72nd minute. However, Morocco refused to surrender and found a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time through Issa Diop, whose powerful header forced the match into extra time.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes, sending the contest to penalties.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved why he is considered one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers, delivering another outstanding performance under pressure. Successful spot-kicks from Soufiane Rahimi, Chemsdine Talbi, and Ismael Saibari secured Morocco’s place in the Round of 16.

The Atlas Lions will now face co-host Canada, which defeated South Africa 1-0, as Morocco continues its pursuit of another historic World Cup achievement.

Algeria Falls to Switzerland as Riyad Mahrez Ends International Career

Algeria’s World Cup journey came to an end following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Vancouver.

The Desert Foxes started brightly, controlling possession and creating early opportunities through captain Riyad Mahrez and Houssem Aouar. Despite their strong opening, Switzerland struck first in the 12th minute when Breel Embolo finished a swift counterattack to give the Europeans the lead.

Algeria continued pressing throughout the first half but struggled to convert their dominance into clear scoring chances. Switzerland maintained its defensive discipline while remaining dangerous on the break.

The decisive moment arrived immediately after halftime when Dan Ndoye capitalized on a costly Algerian defensive error to double Switzerland’s advantage in the 46th minute.

Although Algeria continued attacking through Mahrez, Aouar, and Rayan Ait-Nouri, Switzerland comfortably protected its lead to secure qualification for the Round of 16.

Following the final whistle, Riyad Mahrez officially announced his retirement from international football after more than twelve years representing Algeria.

The 35-year-old reflected on the team’s campaign, admitting that defensive mistakes proved costly while highlighting the achievement of advancing beyond the group stage. Mahrez concludes his international career with 119 appearances, 40 goals, and 44 assists, leaving behind one of the greatest legacies in Algerian football history.

Belgium Produces Stunning Comeback to Eliminate Senegal

Senegal suffered one of the tournament’s most heartbreaking eliminations after surrendering a two-goal lead in a thrilling 3-2 extra-time defeat against Belgium in Seattle.

The Lions of Teranga looked destined for the Round of 16 after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr established a commanding 2-0 advantage. Senegal maintained control for nearly the entire match and remained two goals ahead until the closing minutes.

Belgium launched an extraordinary comeback when Romelu Lukaku scored in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans equalized just three minutes later.

Extra time appeared headed toward a penalty shootout until VAR awarded Belgium a decisive penalty late in the second extra period. Tielemans converted from the spot to complete one of the tournament’s most dramatic comebacks and send Senegal out of the World Cup.

The defeat represented one of the most painful moments for African supporters, as Senegal had been only minutes away from another memorable knockout-stage victory.

Ivory Coast Exits Despite Impressive Performance Against Norway

Ivory Coast’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Norway.

The Elephants approached the match cautiously against the attacking threat of Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard. Although Nicolas Pépé and Yann Diomandé created promising opportunities, Norway struck first through Antonio Nusa before halftime.

Second-half substitutions transformed Ivory Coast’s performance, with Amad Diallo injecting pace and creativity into the attack. Diallo equalized in the 74th minute after excellent work from Pépé, giving the African side renewed hope.

However, Haaland demonstrated his world-class finishing by scoring the decisive winner in the 86th minute. Ivory Coast nearly forced extra time, but Evan Guessand’s late header narrowly missed the target, ending the team’s impressive World Cup run despite an encouraging performance.

Canada Breaks South African Hearts in Stoppage Time

South Africa’s remarkable World Cup journey ended in cruel fashion after a stoppage-time 1-0 defeat against co-host Canada.

Bafana Bafana produced another disciplined defensive display, frustrating the higher-ranked Canadians throughout the match with exceptional organization and determination.

As extra time approached, Stephen Eustáquio scored the decisive goal to send Canada into the Round of 16.

Although eliminated, South Africa departed with immense pride after reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history and delivering one of Africa’s most inspiring performances during the tournament.

England Overcomes Brave DR Congo Challenge

The Democratic Republic of Congo came within minutes of producing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets before eventually losing 2-1 to England.

Bryan Sebinga stunned England by opening the scoring in the seventh minute after an excellent assist from captain Chancel Mbemba.

DR Congo defended courageously for much of the contest, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi producing several outstanding saves to deny Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Yoane Wissa also struck the post before halftime as the African side threatened to extend its lead.

England’s quality eventually prevailed after substitute Anthony Gordon transformed the match. Harry Kane equalized in the 75th minute before scoring the winner in the 86th following another Gordon assist.

Despite the defeat, DR Congo earned widespread admiration for pushing one of Europe’s strongest teams to the limit and showcasing the growing strength of African football.

Africa Awaits More World Cup Success

With Morocco already through to the Round of 16, African hopes now rest on Egypt, Ghana, and Cape Verde as they attempt to extend the continent’s presence in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages.

While several African teams suffered painful exits, their performances highlighted the increasing competitiveness of African football on the global stage. Morocco’s continued success, combined with the fighting spirit displayed by Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, South Africa, and DR Congo, reinforces the continent’s growing influence in international football and keeps alive the dream of another historic African achievement at the World Cup.
