Although Algeria continued attacking through Mahrez, Aouar, and Rayan Ait-Nouri, Switzerland comfortably protected its lead to secure qualification for the Round of 16.
Following the final whistle, Riyad Mahrez officially announced his retirement from international football after more than twelve years representing Algeria.
The 35-year-old reflected on the team’s campaign, admitting that defensive mistakes proved costly while highlighting the achievement of advancing beyond the group stage. Mahrez concludes his international career with 119 appearances, 40 goals, and 44 assists, leaving behind one of the greatest legacies in Algerian football history.
Belgium Produces Stunning Comeback to Eliminate Senegal
Senegal suffered one of the tournament’s most heartbreaking eliminations after surrendering a two-goal lead in a thrilling 3-2 extra-time defeat against Belgium in Seattle.

Bryan Sebinga stunned England by opening the scoring in the seventh minute after an excellent assist from captain Chancel Mbemba.
DR Congo defended courageously for much of the contest, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi producing several outstanding saves to deny Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Yoane Wissa also struck the post before halftime as the African side threatened to extend its lead.
England’s quality eventually prevailed after substitute Anthony Gordon transformed the match. Harry Kane equalized in the 75th minute before scoring the winner in the 86th following another Gordon assist.
Despite the defeat, DR Congo earned widespread admiration for pushing one of Europe’s strongest teams to the limit and showcasing the growing strength of African football.
Africa Awaits More World Cup Success
With Morocco already through to the Round of 16, African hopes now rest on Egypt, Ghana, and Cape Verde as they attempt to extend the continent’s presence in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages.
