Foreign Minister Meets his Senegalese Counterpart on the Sidelines of the Inauguration of the New Senghor University Headquarters

On the sidelines of the inauguration of the new Senghor University headquarters in Alexandria, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates, met on Saturday, May 9, with Mr. Cheikh Niang, Senegalese Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad.
The meeting discussed means to strengthen bilateral relations and to coordinate positions regarding various African issues.
Minister Abdelatty praised the growing momentum witnessed at the level of Egypt-Senegal relations, and affirmed the mutual keenness to advancing them towards broader horizons.
Furthermore, Dr. Abdelatty asserted that Egypt views Senegal as an important strategic partner in West Africa.
He underscored the importance of boosting political and diplomatic coordination between the two countries within the various regional and international forums, including on water issues and means to address the challenges of water scarcity and promote cross-border cooperation.
Dr. Abdelatty expressed aspiration for continued coordination with Senegal during its co-chairmanship, with the United Arab Emirates, of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, coinciding with Senegal’s presidency of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW).
In this context, Minister Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s full support for Senegal’s development efforts pursued within the framework of its five-year plan and “Vision 2050,” expressing Cairo’s eagerness to continue transferring its expertise in infrastructure, energy, construction, irrigation network projects, and land reclamation.
In this regard, the Minister noted the effective role of Egyptian private sector companies in implementing projects of priority for the Senegalese side, and reviewed the ongoing preparations for the African Union’s 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting and the Africa Alamein Forum to be held in El Alamein city next month.
The two ministers also expressed appreciation for the opening of the new Senghor University campus in Alexandria, considered as a qualitative addition to Egypt-Africa cooperation in educational and academic fields, and an important platform for qualifying African cadres in development, management, and capacity-building.
Regarding regional and global developments, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for counter terrorism efforts in West Africa and the Sahel regions.
The Minister reiterated the necessity of adopting a comprehensive approach that combines the security and development dimensions in order to confront this scourge.
The two ministers agreed to continue intensive coordination and consultation during the upcoming stage, with a view to supporting security and stability in the African continent and consolidating the strategic partnership between the two countries.
