Grand Connection: Cairo’s Metro Line 4 as the Backbone of Egypt’s Green Mobility Revolution

Egypt has significantly accelerated the expansion of its metro network in recent years, driving a national strategy to shift commuters away from private vehicles and informal transport toward a more sustainable urban future. At the heart of this transformation is the construction of Metro Line 4, which is designed to function as a vital east-west corridor across Greater Cairo, a metropolis of over 20 million people currently grappling with intense traffic congestion and rising transport costs that weigh heavily on economic productivity.

This new line will serve as a key interchange hub, creating a seamless multi-modal network by connecting with Metro Lines 1 and 2, the future Line 6, the East Nile Monorail, and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. By integrating these diverse transit options, Egypt aims to drastically reduce urban emissions and fuel consumption while enhancing the daily efficiency of millions of commuters.
The implementation of Line 4 is being supported through a long-standing and strategic partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has provided significant financing and technical expertise to ensure the project meets world-class standards.

This collaboration was recently highlighted on April 28, 2026, when President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inspected progress at the Al-Ahramat station, emphasizing the project’s role in linking densely populated districts to the nation’s expanding green transport infrastructure.

As tunnel boring machines complete critical sections between 6th of October City and Fustat, the project remains a cornerstone of Egypt’s broader logistics ambition, turning the challenge of urban density into a catalyst for modern, low-carbon growth.
