Digital Formalization: Cote d’Ivoire Launches Massive Campaign to Integrate 1.5 Million Traders into the National Economy

Cote d’Ivoire has officially embarked on a nationwide mission to standardize its commercial landscape by launching a three-month intensive drive to register over 1.5 million economic operators ,This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Commerce, utilizes a proximity-based approach designed to bridge the gap between the government and local traders through direct engagement and simplified compliance procedures.
By requiring a digital trader card for all actors within the National Register of Traders and Entrepreneurs, the Ivorian government aims to move its vast informal market into a regulated framework, there by significantly boosting the commercial sector’s direct contribution to the national GDP.
The project is not merely an administrative exercise but a strategic effort to recover outstanding fees and enhance the transparency of the domestic market. Implementing partners have emphasized that collective mobilization will be key to meeting the ambitious goal of registering such a high volume of participants in a short timeframe.
This push toward digital formalization reflects a broader regional trend in West Africa, where governments are increasingly leveraging technology to expand the tax base and provide a clearer picture of economic activity.
As Cote d’Ivoire seeks to solidify its position as an economic powerhouse in the region, the successful integration of these traders is expected to provide the state with the necessary data and revenue to fund future infrastructure and social development projects.
