Imperative of Scale: Africa’s Strategic Leap Toward a Science and Technology Driven Economy

African officials and international experts have issued a collective call for immediate and coordinated action to harness science, technology, and digital innovation as the primary engines of economic transformation.

During the eighth African Science, Technology, and Innovation Forum held in Addis Ababa, the consensus emerged that the continent must move beyond the mere generation of ideas and toward the disciplined execution of practical projects at scale.

This shift is seen as the only viable path to meaningful industrialization and job creation, with leaders emphasizing that the era of deliberation has effectively ended.

The persistent gap between Africa’s vast potential and its actual digital output remains a critical concern, as the cost of further inaction continues to rise amidst a rapidly evolving global landscape.

The urgency of this transition is underscored by the realization that the margin for delay has vanished, leaving the continent at a defining crossroads where the choices made today will determine its participation in the next wave of global transformation.

To facilitate this broad-based change, five strategic priorities have been identified, ranging from the alignment of innovation with national economic agendas to the acceleration of investment in digital public infrastructure.

Furthermore, building a future-ready workforce and deepening regional coordination are viewed as essential pillars for success.

However, the success of this digital overhaul remains fundamentally tied to securing reliable and affordable energy, which serves as the lifeblood of any modern industrial system, ensuring that the continent does not miss the opportunity to integrate its markets and secure its place as a driver of global growth.
